Op Art, short for Optical Art, is all about creating visual illusions through art. This movement became popular in the 1960s, with artists using high-contrast colors, precise shapes, and repeated patterns to trick the eye. Through Op Art, artists explore how we perceive shapes and colors, showing how even simple designs can create complex illusions. During this lesson, we’ll explore work by Op artists Bridget Riley, Victor Vasarely and Jesús Rafael Soto. Then we’ll create our own Op Art using high contrast, geometric shapes, and distorted patterns to create a sense of movement and depth.
