Studio Night | Sam Gilliam

  • ArtsClub 311 East 3rd Street New York, NY, 10009 United States (map)

Create abstract, textured “rake paintings” in the style of Sam Gilliam.

The vibrant colors and textures found throughout Sam Gilliam’s work is inspired in large part by the improvisational nature of jazz music. Among his most well known series are his “rake paintings”, for which he thickened his paint, mixing it with assorted materials, and used a garden rake to create a patterned texture across the surface of the canvas. During this event, you’ll learn about Sam Gilliam’s artistic journey and how he created his most famous works. Then we’ll turn up the music and you’ll get the same materials he used for his rake paintings so that you can create your own Gilliam-inspired abstract works!

Ticket includes lesson, wine and art materials (including a 9x12 inch canvas). Coveralls/ smocks will be provided to protect your clothing.
