Sam Gilliam is an Abstract Expressionist artist, best known for his “Drape” paintings, which involve highly saturated colors soaked into unprimed canvas and suspended from the walls or ceiling without stretcher bars. Gilliam’s work came to prominence in DC in the 1950s and 60s, during the height of the Civil Rights Movement. In 1972, Gilliam became the first African American artist to represent the US in the Venice Biennale.
