Dive into the vibrant world of the Washington Color School in this immersive workshop where color takes center stage.
The Washington Color School was an art movement starting during the 1950s–1970s in Washington, D.C., built off the Abstract Expressionist movement in NYC. Color was of central importance to this the Washington Color School, inspiring many of its artists to explore its optical effects or transcendent properties in their paintings.
Inspired by the groundbreaking work of artists like Morris Louis, Kenneth Noland, Alma Thomas, and Sam Gilliam you’ll explore techniques that celebrate bold stripes, flowing color fields, and the emotional power of abstraction. Participants will learn about the movement’s emphasis on color and form, and experiment with unique painting techniques such as staining, pouring, or using painters tape to create crisply executed lines.
