Collage Styles & Techniques

This is a four lesson series, during which you'll learn how artists throughout history have used collage to capture trends in thought and style during their time. Then, you'll practice their techniques and develop the tools you need to express yourself through collage.

All lessons meet in-person at 311 East Third Street, New York.
Vaccination is required for entry.

  • Week 1: Surrealist Collage

    Learn how Surrealist artists created dream-like works by using collage — then create your own fantasy work, incorporating vintage magazines, paint and other mixed-media materials

  • Week 2: Abstract Expressionist Collage

    Sunday, October 10

    Learn about the role of collage in Abstract Expressionism and create your own abstract composition using cut papers, paint and other mixed media materials.

  • Week 3: Pop Art Collage

    Sunday, October 24

    Learn collage techniques practiced by pop artists and make your own collage inspired by mass media and advertising, using vintage ads and magazines.

  • Week 4: Vision Board

    Sunday, November 7

    Reach into the depths of your imagination to create a vision board that reflects your interests and desires.

About your instructor:
Deming King Harriman

Deming is a collage artist and graphic designer based in Brooklyn. She graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Illustration and has since showcased her work in galleries, museums and art fairs across the nation. Deming’s work draws from mythology and folklore to create fantastical characters, expressed in a manner th­at indulges in wonder and storytelling.
